The Thimphu Tshechu is one of Bhutan’s most vibrant and significant festivals, held annually in the capital city of Thimphu. It is a religious festival honoring Guru Rinpoche, who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, and it features colorful masked dances, traditional music, and other cultural performances. The festival usually takes place over several days in fall, typically around late September to early October. Here’s a suggested itinerary for experiencing the Thimphu Tshechu:

Additional Tips:

  1. Clothing: Dress modestly and respectfully, and respectfully, covering shoulders and knees. Bhutanese traditional dress (Gho for men and Kira for women) is encouraged.
  2. Etiquette: Always move clockwise around religious structures and follow the local’s lead during prayers and rituals.
  3. Photography: Ask for permission before taking photos, especially of monks and during religious ceremonies.
  4. Altitude: Thimphu is at an altitude of about 2,334 meters (7,657 feet). Take it easy on the first day to acclimate.

Tour Plan

You will meet our team carrying your name placard at the Airport Gate who will drive you to Thimphu. (1.5 – 2-hour drive)

Then we will drop you to a comfortable hotel in Paro for check in and freshening up.

Alternatively, you can visit local areas in Thimphu and familiarize yourself with the way of living in Bhutan.

Before dinner, you will visit cafes and attend evening show in the clock tower performed by local artists and singers who often showcases their talents through music videos in YouTube channels. You will get to see a unique genre of musicals and modern entertainment in Bhutan. After dinner, you will settle for night in the hotel in Thimphu.

Morning: You will have an early breakfast and the team will drive you directly to the Buddha Point, a towering statute of the Great Buddha Dordenma overlooking the southern Thimphu valley. The statute is one of the largest Buddha rupas in the world and the site is prominent destination to contemplate and experience inner peace fostered by serene beauty and other calming hallmarks of the destination.

Then head to Tashichho Dzong early to secure a good spot. Witness the opening ceremonies and masked dances (cham dances).

Afternoon: lunch at a nearby restaurant or packed picnic. Then again enjoy more performances, including the dance of the Black Hats and the dance of the Stag.

Evening: stroll through the handicraft market. After dinner, you will settle for night in the hotel.

Morning: after the breakfast of the day, attend the second day of the festival for different performances. Participate in prayers and rituals with locals.

Afternoon: lunch at a near by restaurant or packed picnic. Continue to enjoy the festival dances, such as the Guru Tshengye (Eight Manifestations of Guru Rinpoche).

Evening: you can visit the Folk Heritage Museum to learn about Bhutanese culture.

After breakfast of the day, visit the National Textile Museum and explore the Bhutan Postal Museum.

Afternoon: have a lunch at Bhutanese restaurant for Bhutanese dish.

Visit Buddha Dordenma, a gigantic Shakyamuni Buddha Statue.

Evening: Relax and enjoy dinner at your hotel.

Experience the grand finale of the Thimphu Tshechu. Watch the unveiling off the Thongdrel, a large religious scroll.

Afternoon: have a lunch at a nearby restaurant or packed lunch. Then participate in the closing rituals and ceremonies.

Evening: free time for shopping or relax at hotel. Then we will have final and farewell dinner at a renown restaurant or hotel. Relax and enjoy your last sleep-in hotel until next visit.

Morning: After breakfast, the team will drive you to Paro International Airport calculating the time for your departure flight. The team will bid you farewell and wish you safe journey for your next chapter in life.

(If time permits, you can visit Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), Ringpung Dzong (Paro Dzong) and Museum (Taa Dzong)  .
